Tributes from Nigerian students across the country and in the diaspora have continued to pour in for the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, following his birthday on October 6, with students commending his leadership and implementation of the Federal Government’s student-loan initiative.

The birthday celebration has provided an opportunity for beneficiaries and supporters of the scheme to reflect on the impact of NELFUND in easing the financial burden of tertiary education and helping students remain focused on their academic pursuits.

The students’ appreciation also extends to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration established the current NELFUND framework and appointed Sawyerr as its pioneer Managing Director/CEO in April 2024. The State House said the appointment was intended to support the effective take-off of the Fund and deliver sustainable higher-education financing for Nigerian students and families.

President Tinubu has himself publicly commended Sawyerr and the NELFUND leadership for their work, stressing that the student-loan scheme was designed to remove financial barriers to higher education and promote equity and inclusion.

For many students, the significance of NELFUND goes beyond figures and disbursement statistics. The scheme provides institutional-fee support and upkeep assistance, helping eligible beneficiaries pursue their education while reducing the immediate financial pressure on their families.

Recent student testimonies have also highlighted this impact. In August, students of the University of Abuja publicly applauded President Tinubu for introducing NELFUND, saying the intervention had eased the financial burden of higher education, while also appreciating Sawyerr and the Fund’s leadership for translating the initiative into tangible support.

Under Sawyerr’s leadership, NELFUND has continued to expand its operations and stakeholder engagement, including efforts to improve awareness and access to the scheme. On October 6, for instance, Sawyerr engaged the Lagos State Government on strengthening awareness and ensuring that more eligible students can access NELFUND opportunities.

The latest birthday tributes therefore represent more than personal felicitations for Sawyerr. They reflect the growing public attention around a student-financing programme that has become an important part of Nigeria’s higher-education landscape.

As students celebrate the NELFUND chief, many have also used the occasion to acknowledge President Tinubu for establishing and backing the initiative, while recognising Sawyerr for his role in turning the policy into a functioning national student-support programme.

For beneficiaries who once faced difficult choices over school fees and other educational expenses, the message from the birthday tributes is clear: NELFUND has given many students another pathway to remain in school, while Sawyerr’s leadership continues to be closely associated with the implementation of that opportunity.
