Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were kidnapped while travelling to their orientation camps in Imo State have regained their freedom.
The victims were reportedly abducted along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State, while on their way to their respective orientation camps.
They were rescued during a coordinated, intelligence-led security operation involving the military, Department of State Services (DSS), police and other security agencies.
Reports indicate that 20 prospective corps members and another hostage were released following the operation.
The development comes days after reports of the abduction of prospective corps members travelling to orientation camps in parts of the South-East, raising concerns over the safety of young Nigerians embarking on the mandatory national service programme.
The successful rescue highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to track criminal elements and protect prospective corps members and other travellers along major highways in the region.
