…initiative strengthens public institutions while equipping young professionals with practical workplace experience

Enugu State has deployed more than 300 young professionals to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for a 12-month placement under the Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP), providing additional technical and administrative support to public institutions while helping participants gain valuable professional experience.

The programme, coordinated in the state through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency (Enugu SME Center), is aimed at bridging the gap between academic qualifications and workplace experience by giving young graduates opportunities to apply their knowledge in real professional settings.

During their placements, the Fellows contributed to various functions, including data management, research, technology, administration, programme implementation and other technical assignments, supporting the operations of participating government institutions.

The initiative reflects the focus on human capital development within Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration, with youth employment, skills development and institutional capacity forming part of the broader conversation around economic growth and public service delivery in Enugu State.

Beyond providing work experience, the 12-month placement offers participating young professionals an opportunity to develop workplace discipline, strengthen their technical competencies and acquire practical knowledge that can improve their prospects in the labour market.

For the participating MDAs, the programme provides additional personnel capacity to support day-to-day operations, research, data-related tasks and programme delivery, depending on the responsibilities assigned to individual Fellows.

The programme therefore connects youth development with institutional support, creating an avenue through which young professionals can contribute to public service while building experience relevant to future career opportunities.

The Enugu SME Center’s involvement also aligns with its broader mandate of promoting enterprise development, employability and opportunities for young people across the state.

With more than 300 Fellows participating in the programme, the initiative highlights the role that structured professional placements can play in preparing young graduates for the demands of the workplace and strengthening the human resource capacity available to public institutions.

The experience gained during the placement can also help participants build professional networks, demonstrate their capabilities and improve their readiness for opportunities across both the public and private sectors.

Ultimately, the Nigerian Jubilee Fellows Programme in Enugu represents an approach that brings together youth development, practical learning and public-sector support, with the aim of helping young people build careers while contributing to the work of government institutions.

Over 300 Fellows. Twelve months of professional experience. Stronger workforce capacity.
