"Blood of Our Daughters Is Not Cheap!”: Umuada Awgu Global Raises Alarm Over Alleged Abuse and Neglect of Late Onyinye Nweze

Crystal Palace Estate

A deep sense of sorrow and anger has engulfed communities across Awgu and its environs following the painful death and controversial burial circumstances of Late Mrs. Onyinye Nweze (Nee Okolo), a daughter of Agbogugu origin who was married into Ugbawka, leaving behind a trail of grief, unanswered questions, and emotional trauma for her family and loved ones.

The incident, which has now sparked widespread outrage, has drawn a strong response from women leaders under the umbrella of Umuada Awgu Global, who described the circumstances surrounding her illness, passing, and burial as deeply troubling and unacceptable. The group expressed that what transpired before and after her death reflects a painful pattern of alleged neglect, humiliation, and disregard for human dignity, especially in the treatment of women within marriage and family structures.

According to reports shared within the community, the late Mrs. Nweze endured a prolonged illness marked by emotional and physical distress, with concerns raised about how her welfare was handled during that period. The situation, however, reached a breaking point during her burial, where intervention by members of Umuada Awgu Global and other sympathizers was reportedly required to ensure that her biological parents were allowed a final moment of farewell.

The tragedy has since ignited emotional reactions across Agbogugu in Agbogugu and Ugbawka in Ugbawka, with many describing the episode as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities women face in silence and the urgent need for stronger protection of their dignity in both life and death.

In a strongly worded statement titled “THE BLOOD OF OUR DAUGHTERS IS NOT CHEAP – A Stern Warning from Umuada Awgu Global Against Abuse, Neglect and Inhuman Treatment of Women,” the group lamented the circumstances and issued a powerful warning against the continued mistreatment of women.

Full text of statement:

“The leadership and members of Umuada Awgu Worldwide wish to express our profound grief, outrage, and deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the illness, death, and burial of our beloved daughter, Late Mrs. Onyinye Nweze (Nee Okolo), whose passing has left an indelible scar on the hearts of her family, community, friends, and all who followed her painful journey.

As mothers, daughters, wives, sisters, and custodians of family values, we are compelled to speak when a woman's dignity is threatened, when her voice is silenced, and when her suffering appears to be ignored.

The events that unfolded before and after the demise of our daughter born to Agbogugu parents and married to Ugbawka have raised troubling questions and generated widespread concern among members of our community and beyond.

Reports presented to us suggest a pattern of neglect, humiliation, disregard for her welfare, and a disturbing lack of compassion during her prolonged battle with illness.

Particularly heartbreaking were the circumstances surrounding her burial, where members of Umuada Awgu Global, alongside concerned individuals and sympathizers, had to intervene to ensure that her parents were given the opportunity to behold their daughter and bid her a final farewell. Every daughter deserves dignity in life and dignity in death. Anything less diminishes our shared humanity.

We commend all those who stood on the side of compassion, including concerned church leaders, women groups, community stakeholders, and individuals who sacrificed time, resources, and emotions in pursuit of justice and dignity for the deceased.

Let it be known that the death of a woman must never become an opportunity for intimidation, suppression, or the erasure of her identity and family heritage.

Today, Umuada Awgu Worldwide sends a clear message:

Our daughters are not disposable.

Our daughters are not slaves.

Our daughters are not objects to be used, neglected, discarded, or dishonoured.

Marriage is not a license for cruelty.

Love is not neglect.

Leadership is not oppression.

Manhood is not measured by domination but by responsibility, compassion, and honour.

We therefore serve notice to every man, regardless of status, wealth, position, or influence:

If you cannot treat a woman with dignity, respect, kindness, and humanity, stay away from our daughters.

The days when women suffered in silence are gone.

The era when families looked away is over.

The age when communities folded their arms while daughters were mistreated has passed.

Umuada Awgu Global will continue to stand as a voice for the vulnerable, a shield for the oppressed, and a platform through which justice and accountability shall be pursued.

We are consulting widely and shall support all lawful efforts aimed at ensuring that every question surrounding this painful episode is properly addressed through appropriate legal and institutional channels.

This statement is not born out of hatred.

It is born out of grief.

It is born out of love for our daughter.

It is born out of our determination that no other woman should suffer a similar fate.

May the soul of our beloved daughter Onyinye rest in peace.

May justice prevail.

May every home learn that kindness is not weakness and that every woman deserves to be treated with dignity.

Never forget: When you touch one daughter of Awgu Local Government, you touch all of us.

Signed:

Umụada Awgu Progressive Association
