A young politician, Kingsley Chizoba Nweke, has emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Enugu East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a highly competitive direct primary held in Enugu State.

The primary election took place on Wednesday at Nkwo Market Square, Ishi-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where a large number of party delegates participated in the exercise. According to the official announcement by the election committee, a total of 43,441 delegates were accredited for the process, while Nweke secured a landslide victory with 42,341 votes, leaving a wide margin over other contenders.

The election was supervised by the PDP Senatorial Primary Election Committee led by John Chikezie Nnam, who formally declared Nweke as the winner after collating the results. The exercise was widely described by party officials as peaceful, orderly, and credible, with observers noting the impressive turnout of party faithful across the senatorial district.

The National Senatorial Electoral Primary Committee chairman, Prince Marshall Okafor, commended the conduct of the election, describing it as free and fair. He said the overwhelming participation demonstrated the strong acceptance of the candidate among party members and grassroots supporters.

Also speaking, the Enugu State PDP Chairman, Vitus Okechi, praised the peaceful atmosphere that characterized the primary, insisting that the party remained united and fully prepared for the 2027 elections. He dismissed claims of internal divisions, stating that both state and national leadership structures of the party remained intact.

Following his declaration, Nweke expressed gratitude to party members and delegates for their overwhelming support, pledging to provide effective representation if elected in 2027. He promised to prioritize road infrastructure and healthcare delivery, describing them as fundamental rights rather than political campaign promises.

He also emphasized the need for continuous engagement with constituents, pledging to establish mechanisms that would educate citizens on accountability and democratic responsibility. According to him, improved governance and civic awareness would strengthen democracy and ensure better leadership outcomes in the district.

Nweke further called for unity within the party ahead of the general elections, urging stakeholders to close ranks and work together to secure victory for the PDP in Enugu East Senatorial District.

The primary election concluded with a large turnout of party members, marking what stakeholders described as one of the most decisive party primaries in the state’s recent political history.
