BREAKING: FG Announces New Resumption Date For Unity Schools

The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has announced a new resumption date for students attending the 112 Federal Government Colleges. Students are now expected to return to school on January 12, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled date of January 5. The extension was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of FME, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, and is attributed to ongoing renovations at several of the colleges.

The decision to extend the resumption date was communicated through a circular issued to school principals, following approval from the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad. The announcement has created some confusion, particularly at Kings College in Lagos, where no official update regarding the resumption schedule has been provided, leaving parents uncertain about the status of the upcoming term.

Traditionally, senior students who are preparing for exams such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) return to school earlier than other students. However, no formal notice has been issued regarding this practice for the current year.

Meanwhile, parents of Senior Secondary III students are in the process of making payments for the upcoming term. The fees amount to ₦58,000, which covers various expenses. These include boarding fees of ₦30,000, as well as a balance of ₦11,000 for WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB examination fees. Other costs include ₦2,000 for medical, ICT training, extra lessons, and utility fees, and ₦1,000 for sports, vocational training, and security services.
