Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has made a significant contribution of N50 million to Shanahan University, a newly established institution in Onitsha.

Speaking at the university’s official opening ceremony, Obi highlighted the critical role of knowledge in shaping the future, emphasizing that "knowledge is the currency of the future," surpassing the value of oil. He lauded the founder, His Grace Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha, for his visionary leadership and commitment to education. Obi urged the public to continue supporting the church’s mission of promoting education, which he believes is essential for humanity’s advancement.

"Our focus as a society should be on preparing for tomorrow," Obi remarked, recognizing the church's global efforts in providing top-tier educational institutions.

Archbishop Valerian Okeke expressed profound gratitude to Peter Obi for his continuous support of missionary-run educational institutions. During his tenure as governor, Obi had extended numerous aids to similar institutions. The Archbishop also announced that all students of Shanahan University would benefit from free internet access until January 2025, further enhancing their learning experience.

The Vice Chancellor of Shanahan University, Professor Obi Oguejiofor, shared the institution’s ambitious vision of becoming one of Nigeria’s top universities. He disclosed that the university's pioneer cohort, consisting of over 200 students, is currently benefiting from tuition-free education for this academic session, demonstrating the university's commitment to accessibility and excellence.

The event marks a significant step toward educational development in the region, with Peter Obi’s donation serving as a catalyst for the university's growth and the broader mission of educational empowerment.
