In an unprecedented move on the 15th of October, 2024, history was made as Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba, the dynamic PTA Chairman of Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu, paid a landmark visit to the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu at his office in FCT, Abuja. The purpose of this visit was to seek Federal Government urgent intervention in addressing the critical infrastructural needs of the noble College which is the Zonal Head of Unity Schools in South East Nigeria. It was a day that marked the beginning of transformative change, highlighting the PTA Chairman’s visionary leadership as a capacity builder.
Victor Hugo once said, “He who opens a school door, closes a prison.” This quote captures the essence of the PTA Chairman’s mission during the visit. Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba Dike eji eje mba na Enugu State recognised that providing a secure and conducive environment for students is crucial to their education and overall development. His request for the refencing of the school, where several portions have collapsed, seeks to ensure that FGC Enugu remains a safe place for learning, free from external threats and unauthorised access.
As Socrates wisely noted, “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba’s appeal for the renovation of the students’ hostels, particularly the installation of modern water closets, demonstrates his deep understanding of this philosophy. By improving the living conditions of the students, he aims to ignite their potential, providing them with the hygiene and comfort necessary to focus on their academic pursuits.
In line with Diogenes’ statement, “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth,” the PTA Chairman also called for the renovation of the staff quarters. By enhancing staff morale through better living conditions, Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba believes that the educators at FGC Enugu will be better positioned to mould the future leaders of Nigeria. His focus on capacity-building reflects his commitment to not just the present, but the future of the College.
Lao Tzu once said, “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” This reflects Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba’s leadership style, as he quietly but effectively works to uplift FGC Enugu without seeking personal glory. His focus is on the collective achievement of the school community, ensuring that the fruits of his efforts benefit all.
In the spirit of Cicero’s wisdom, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others,” Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba expresses profound appreciation to the Honourable Minister of State, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, for his gracious reception and his prompt assurances. The Minister’s commitment to addressing the critical infrastructural needs within one week is a testament to the government’s dedication to fostering educational excellence.
Among the requests made were not limited to the above but also included the installation of solar lights to brighten the College environment and the provision of a well-equipped ambulance with modern facilities to ensure the safety and health of the students and staff.
