Gov. Fubara Calls for Unity and Peace in Rivers State Amid Recent Political Turmoil
Governor Similanayi Fubara of Rivers State has reached out to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, urging him to collaborate and leverage their positions and influence to promote progress, security, and the well-being of Rivers State. In a personally signed message delivered on Saturday in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara extended his apologies to the people of the state for the regrettable anxieties that have gripped the region in recent days.
The tension in Rivers State escalated on Monday when the State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaehwule, made an attempt to impeach Governor Fubara. To address the evolving situation, Governor Fubara issued a press statement highlighting the events of the past few days within the state.
He disclosed, "Late on Sunday night, the 29th of October, 2023, I received reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly had been engulfed in a fire. Thankfully, the blaze was extinguished by the fire service, and security agencies swiftly took control of the situation."
Governor Fubara further stated that his visit to the Assembly complex on Monday, the 30th of October, 2023, aimed to assess the extent of the damage and take remedial measures to safeguard lives and property within the Assembly complex. He also charged security agencies with a thorough investigation into the incident and reporting their findings to him.
Following these events, Rivers State House of Assembly found itself divided into two factions, with one faction claiming to have impeached and suspended the House leader and three others in preparation for an impeachment action against Governor Fubara. The opposing faction, in response, impeached the speaker and deputy speaker, leading to a political crisis within the state.
Governor Fubara expressed his gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his intervention, which facilitated communication channels to address and resolve the ongoing crisis. He also acknowledged the efforts of the state's elders who are actively mediating in the matter.
Governor Fubara emphasized that his actions are driven by his commitment to restoring peace and stability in the state, highlighting that the advancement of Rivers State is his primary concern. He pledged his willingness to make any necessary sacrifices to achieve this objective, as he is a man of peace and Governor of the state.
The people of Rivers State and the nation at large now look to the collaborative efforts of Governor Fubara and Barrister Nyesom Wike, as they work together to navigate the challenges and steer the state towards a more secure and prosperous future.
