A prominent Human Rights and Women advocacy group, Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) has issued a statement calling on lawmakers from the South-East region of Nigeria to take decisive actions in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for an extended period.
Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, the founder of WOSCONET, emphasized the urgency of the matter and urged South-East legislators to engage their counterparts in the National Assembly to find a workable solution for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. She believes that taking action on this issue will contribute to alleviating the tension prevailing in the region.
In her statement, Amb. Nweke stated, "South East Lawmakers are yet to make moves in this regard. Let them make it a priority, from the House of Assembly to the representatives and the Senate."
She further emphasized that the well-being of the South-East region and the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu should be a top priority for all lawmakers. By doing so, it would demonstrate their commitment to addressing the concerns of their constituents and fostering peace and stability in the region.
WOSCONET is a prominent women's advocacy group known for its efforts to promote women's participation in politics and its campaigns against marginalization and ill-treatment of the girl-child in Africa. The organization actively partners with both government and private institutions, undertaking social responsibilities and contributing to development projects across Nigeria.
The call from WOSCONET adds to the mounting pressure on South-East lawmakers to intervene in the case of Nnamdi Kanu, whose detention has sparked considerable controversy and unrest in the region. As various groups and individuals advocate for his release, it remains to be seen how lawmakers will respond to this appeal and what measures they will take to address the situation.
"There is a need that Simon Ekpa's threat of more sit-at-home be countered by the National Assembly as South-East has already lost in the 730 days, every Monday, beginning from August 9, 2021 had been observed as sit-at-home in the region, thus grounding economic activities in the region and causing the region an estimated loss of N7.6 trillion in productivity, potential investments as well as loss of lives and properties" they said.
