The collision subsequently impacted several other vehicles on the road. Among the vehicles involved in the crash were a fully loaded GUO bus en route to Lagos from Ebonyi State, a private car carrying parents and their young son, and an unmarked bus.
Promptly responding to the tragic event, Enugu State's Deputy Governor, Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai, visited the accident site to assess the situation firsthand. Additionally, he paid visits to the hospitals where the injured victims had been transported for medical treatment.
Expressing his gratitude, Barrister Ossai commended the hospitals for their swift response in attending to the injured victims. He also extended his appreciation to the first responders, including military personnel, the Road Safety Corps, fire service, DSS, and the police, acknowledging their efforts in minimizing the number of casualties.
"We visited the private clinic at 9th mile where a substantial number of our citizens are hospitalized, and we are also here at the orthopedic hospital where some of the victims are receiving treatment," stated Barrister Ossai. "We're grateful to the doctors for their prompt interventions because, without them, we would have experienced even more loss. We also appreciate the first responders, including the military personnel, Road Safety Corps, fire service, DSS, and police, and all the institutions that promptly responded and ensured that we didn't lose more lives."
Assuring the injured victims of government support, the deputy governor emphasized that the government would provide assistance for their medical treatment. He further highlighted the importance of strengthening the institutions responsible for maintaining accident-free roads. Barrister Ossai stressed that many accidents are preventable, underscoring the need for regular vehicle maintenance and driver training programs.
The Enugu fatal accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety measures and responsible driving. As investigations into the incident continue, authorities are expected to work towards implementing measures aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The Enugu State Government has expressed its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the accident, while also offering support and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured victims.
