The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah has expressed deep sadness and grief over the passing of the Enugu State-born lawyer, Dr Khrushchev Ekwueme, extolling him as “one of Nigeria’s finest, globally renowned, peerless lawyer in international maritime, arbitration, dispute resolution and public interest litigation”. Mbah in a statement personally signed by him and issued by his media office in Enugu, on Saturday, described his demise as “a great loss to Enugu State and the legal profession where he distinguished himself with many indelible contributions to his credit”. The statement reads in parts: “Dr. Ekwueme’s sudden demise is, indeed, a devastating blow and a colossal loss to the legal profession, in which he had immensely expanded the frontiers of knowledge as an author, litigation counsel and visiting research scholar at the Harvard Law School, United States “. “Dr. Ekwume epitomized humility, dedication, commitm

Enugu 2023: Appeal Court Judgment As Edeoga's Final Waterloo

Image
By Charly Onah  Those who misled Bar. Chijioke Edeoga into Nsukka Labour room unprepared, have succeeded in finishing his political career. This is what a man gets when he has no mind of his own or on a vindictive and envious mission.      Edeoga is being messed up because he lacks the political sagacity and elementary knowledge of law even though he is a lawyer without post bar experience.     When the Federal High Court, Abuja sacked Edeoga for his illegal and fraudulent emergence as Labour Party governorship candidate and ordered for fresh primaries to be conducted within 14 days, I was worried.      My worry was genuine and emanated from the fact that there were too many questions begging for answers from the judgment that sacked Edeoga. These include: Will Labour Party conduct governorship primary again when the time frame for the party primaries as contained in 2023 Electoral Act had elapsed?      Besides, If such primary is to be conducted, would Edeoga participate,

NSUKKA RONU: LEST WE KILL OUR PROPHETS

Image
By Hon. Frank Ugwu Ph.D This is a call to sheath our swords and reinvent the philosophy of NSUKKA KA of the old. Otherwise, we (not they) are killing our prophets while we stand by and look. NSUKKA KA emphasizes unity, monolithic entity, supremacy and promotion of Nsukka cause/interests and mutual support to one another. These attributes were the hallmark of Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo’s era. I remember with nostalgia the emergence of a crop of eminent Nsukka sons and daughters who offered vintage activism and partnership in statecraft, resulting to the prevailing solidarity then  Ready to recollect are names such as Chief Nduka Eya, Maxi Ukuta, Grace Obayi, Hillary Attama, Mike Ajogwu, Justina Eze, Fide Okoro, Julius Onah, Cletus Opata, Ikenna Omeje and so on, all promoting Nsukka cause within the government circle. The synergy was top-notch and helped in stabilizing and in the containment of “free radicals” within Nsukka polity. Today, it is no more. This missing link to my min

DR PETER MBAH: RIDING HIGH IN ENUGU

Image
By Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku  Even his naysayers admit that he is a game changer. Love him or not, Dr. Ndubuisi Mbah, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 governorship election in Enugu state has been the most significant playmaker in Enugu politics for the last 8 months. Known as the single-most important factor in the politics of his senatorial zone of Enugu east, since 2003 - 2004 when he became the chief of staff to the state government as well as Commissioner For Finance, respectively. Mbah has helped to cultivate a political dynasty that has empowered many young people, while also efficiently working to utilize the limited resources under his coordination, for the development of his people. This year, when Enugu chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), elected him as its candidate for governor in the upcoming general elections, Mbah's silent influence could be felt in the life of the party delegates. This is because, as a legal practiti

Ugwuanyi And The Completion Of (SUMAS) University Igbo-Eno

Image
By Samson Ezea  When Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's administration conceived and commenced the building of a brand new specialised University at Igbo Eno, which is the first of it's kind in the Southeast region despite the daunting  economic cum financial challenges, not many cynics  and doubting Thomases, especially from Enugu North  Senatorial zone believed in the actualisation of the unique Ivory tower. Some were even dismissive of it and called it white elephant project that will not see the light of the day. The reason for their pessimism about the actualisation of the University, which is the second University in Enugu North Senatorial zone 64 years after the establishment of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) is more personal and political than altruism and patriotism.     Not daunted by the cynicism and financial challenges occasioned by the economic recessions and COVID-19 pandemic that crippled global economy, Governor Ugwuanyi rem
