The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, Correspondents’ Chapel, has honoured the Federal Character Commission (FCC) Commissioner representing Enugu State, Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze, with an Award of Excellence for Outstanding Youth Leadership.

The award was presented on Thursday night, October 22, 2026, during the grand finale of the 2026 Correspondents’ Chapel Press Week held at the NUJ Press Centre, Rangers Avenue, Enugu.

Eze was recognised for his contributions to youth empowerment, skills development, talent discovery and initiatives aimed at connecting young people with employment, mentorship and career advancement opportunities.

The ceremony, chaired by the former Attorney General of Enugu State, Chief Anthony Ani (SAN), featured discussions around the theme, “Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism: 2027 Polls in Focus.”

Other distinguished recipients at the event included the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi; the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Ben Nwoye; the Executive Director of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Dr Peter Ogbobe; and the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa.

Reacting to the recognition, Eze expressed gratitude and humility, noting that receiving an award from journalists carried special significance because of their responsibility to inform the public, hold leaders accountable and shape public opinion.

He commended the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel for finding him worthy of the honour and urged journalists to continue serving as the conscience of the nation through courageous reporting, balanced storytelling and fair judgment.

According to him, the award represents not only recognition of his previous contributions but also a renewed call to deepen his commitment to public service and youth development.

Eze reaffirmed his determination to create more opportunities for young people, stressing that the true measure of leadership should go beyond titles and positions to the number of lives positively impacted.

“The honour is appreciated, the responsibility is understood, and the commitment to service remains unwavering,” he said.

A major initiative associated with his youth-focused engagements is the Peter Eze Youth Connect 2026, which brought together thousands of young people for interactive sessions, mentorship, career guidance and access to professional development opportunities.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between young Nigerians and available opportunities by connecting participants with relevant institutions, experienced professionals and stakeholders capable of supporting their career aspirations and economic advancement.

Through the programme, Eze has promoted platforms for professional networking, career exploration and mentorship, with the broader objective of equipping young people to pursue economic independence and contribute meaningfully to societal development.

The initiative was described in the report as one of the most popular and impactful youth-focused events of 2026, reflecting growing interest in programmes that address unemployment, skills acquisition and access to career opportunities.

The NUJ recognition highlights the importance of sustained youth-centred leadership and partnerships that translate engagement into practical opportunities for young Nigerians.

For Eze, the honour comes with an expectation of greater responsibility, as he renews his commitment to youth empowerment, inclusive development and public service.
