The Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area and Deputy Chairman of ALGON, Enugu State Chapter, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, on Wednesday led a delegation of Traditional Rulers from Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area on a strategic engagement with the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, where he commended the Police Command and the administration of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for the sustained efforts and coordination towards securing the lives and properties in Enugu State.
The engagement, which brought together the political and traditional leadership of Igbo-Eze South and the leadership of the State Police Command, provided an opportunity to deepen institutional collaboration on community security and reinforce the collective responsibility of government and security agencies in safeguarding lives and property.
Speaking during the visit, Mayor Ukwueze acknowledged the increasingly coordinated approach to security management across Enugu State, noting that the relative peace and stability being witnessed in various communities are products of deliberate leadership, professional policing and improved synergy among relevant security stakeholders.
He particularly commended Governor Peter Mbah for placing security and public safety within the broader framework of sustainable development, stressing that no meaningful economic, social or infrastructural development can thrive in an environment where citizens do not feel secure.
“We have come first to appreciate the work being done. The security of our people is a responsibility that requires courage, professionalism and institutional commitment, and we recognise the efforts of the Police Command and the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah in strengthening the security environment across Enugu State," the Mayor remarked.
The ALGON Deputy Chairman also noted that the success of contemporary community policing depends significantly on the relationship between security agencies and the communities they serve. He therefore emphasised the importance of sustained engagement with traditional institutions, which remain critical channels for grassroots intelligence and early identification of emerging security concerns.
While commending the progress already achieved, Mayor Ukwueze equally appealed to the Commissioner of Police for increased Police presence in Igbo-Eze South, particularly through enhanced visibility and operational deployment to Igbo-EzeSouth Police Division.
He explained that the request was sincerely to consolidata existing security gains and ensure that residents have greater confidence in the responsiveness of security institutions.
In his response, CP M. B. Giwa warmly received the delegation and commended Mayor Ukwueze for what he described as a proactive and responsible approach to security administration.
The Commissioner emphasised the importance of strengthening the human-resource base of the Nigeria Police Force, encouraging increased interest and participation in Police recruitment. He noted that the responsibility of protecting lives and property requires a sufficiently large and motivated workforce, stressing that without a steady influx of capable young people willing to serve, the Police could face manpower constraints that may affect its capacity to effectively respond to the security needs of an expanding population.
He also appreciated the role of the Traditional Rulers in strengthening community-level security and fostering cooperation between residents and law-enforcement agencies and urged traditional institutions and other stakeholders to sensitise eligible young people about opportunities to join the Police Force, describing recruitment not merely as employment, but as an opportunity to contribute directly to the safety and stability of society.
The engagement ultimately reaffirmed the understanding that security is a collective responsibility. While the Police remain central to law enforcement and public safety, effective security outcomes are strengthened when government, traditional institutions and citizens work collaboratively with security agencies. It also reinforced one of the defining priorities of the 8-Point Progress Agenda of Mayor Ukwueze's administration: that meaningful development must be anchored on the security of lives and property
