Professor Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, PhD, has congratulated the people of Enugu State as the Coal City State commemorates its 35th anniversary, using the occasion to reflect on the state’s journey while unveiling a new chapter in his political career as the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his goodwill message, Prof. Nnaji described the 35th anniversary as an important milestone in the history of Enugu State, noting that the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, heritage and achievements of the people while reflecting on the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Enugu State was created on August 27, 1991, following its separation from the then Anambra State. Over three and a half decades, the state has developed into an important centre of education, commerce, culture, administration and economic activity in the South-East.
For Prof. Nnaji, the anniversary is therefore not only a celebration of the past but also an opportunity to consider the kind of leadership and institutions required to sustain development and create opportunities for future generations.
The professor, whose professional background spans international law, global politics, academia and public affairs, has participated in Nigeria’s political process on previous occasions.
His political journey includes his emergence as a senatorial candidate for Enugu East in 2019 and his participation in the 2023 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His latest political outing sees him emerge as the governorship candidate of the NNPP as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Prof. Nnaji's public profile has largely been shaped by his academic and legal career. He is presented by his supporters as a scholar with international exposure and an interest in institutional reform, governance, justice and human development.
His political programmes in previous election cycles have focused on issues including economic development, institutional strengthening, social inclusion, education and grassroots development.
Marking Enugu’s 35th anniversary, Nnaji said the state’s history should inspire renewed commitment to building institutions and an economy capable of providing opportunities for its citizens.
He also acknowledged the contributions of past and present leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, civil servants, traditional institutions, young people, women and other citizens whose efforts have contributed to the development of the state.
“As Enugu marks 35 years, we must celebrate where we have come from while honestly examining where we are going. Our history gives us identity, but our choices and institutions will determine the future we leave for the next generation,” he said.
The anniversary message comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and aspirants beginning to articulate their programmes and positions on the future direction of Enugu State.
For Prof. Nnaji, the latest development marks another phase in a political journey that has seen him move between academia, law, public affairs and electoral politics.
Enugu celebrates 35 years of statehood and his emergence as the NNPP governorship candidate adds another dimension to the developing political landscape ahead of 2027.
