The Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area and Deputy Chairman of ALGON, Enugu State Chapter, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, has commenced exploratory engagements with the University of Waterloo, Canada, towards creating new pathways for education, experiential learning, skills acquisition and global exposure for young people in the Local Government Area.
The engagement, which reflects the administration’s conviction that sustainable development must be anchored on deliberate investment in human capital, brought the Executive Chairman into discussions with Prof. Grant Leach, Associate Director, Institutional Relations and Business Development, University of Waterloo, Canada, and Prof. Adra Raine, Associate Director, Pan African Initiative for Research, University of Waterloo. The discussions focused broadly on potential areas of collaboration and the opportunities that could arise from establishing a structured relationship between the Local Government and the internationally recognised institution.
Presenting the philosophy underpinning his administration’s Youth Development Agenda, Mayor Ukwueze emphasised that education must extend beyond the conventional classroom to include experiential learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and industry-relevant skills. He explained that his administration views the young population not just as beneficiaries of government programmes, but as critical assets whose knowledge and capacity will ultimately determine the socioeconomic trajectory of Igbo-Eze South.
The University of Waterloo representatives, in turn, highlighted a range of opportunities within the university ecosystem that could potentially benefit young people from Igbo-Eze South. These include pathways and programmes relating to entrepreneurship and vocational skills, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, engineering and other emerging and technology-driven fields. They expressed optimism that the exploratory discussions could evolve into a substantive partnership with measurable outcomes for young people across the Local Government Area.
The engagement also aligns with the broader development philosophy of the administration of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Executive Governor of Enugu State, anchored on the “Tomorrow Is Here” vision, which places human capital development, innovation, education and the preparation of young people for the future at the heart of sustainable development. At the local government level, Mayor Ukwueze’s approach, through his Progress Agenda, seeks to translate this vision into practical opportunities by deliberately connecting young people in Igbo-Eze South with institutions, technologies, and knowledge systems that prepare them for the demands of the emerging global economy.
The engagement with the University of Waterloo, therefore, represents another potential step in that direction, connecting local talent with global expertise and creating opportunities for young people to acquire competencies that can position them for participation in the knowledge economy.
