Troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led operation in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The operation, carried out on May 6 in collaboration with other security agencies, was part of ongoing efforts to track suspected terrorist collaborators operating within the community.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops came under attack while advancing on foot towards the area during a patrol mission. In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, three soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.

The army stated that despite the attack, troops maintained control of the situation, repelled the assailants, and secured the area. The injured personnel were promptly evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.

During the gun battle, improvised explosive devices allegedly stored inside a building used by the suspects detonated, triggering a fire that destroyed the structure. Subsequent searches in the area led to the recovery of additional explosives, including improvised explosive devices and locally made hand grenades.

Troops also discovered and destroyed a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities to prevent its continued use for criminal purposes.

One suspected collaborator was arrested during the operation and, along with recovered items, handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

The Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging communities in Imezi Owa and surrounding areas to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid harbouring criminal elements.

The task force also warned members and supporters of IPOB/ESN to desist from unlawful activities or face prosecution, reiterating its resolve to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace in the region.
