Enugu Begins Massive Renovation of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Ahead of National Sports Festival

The Enugu State Government has commenced comprehensive renovation, refurbishment, and modernization works at the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as preparations intensify for the 2026 National Sports Festival.


The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Lloyd Ekweremadu, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Enugu.


According to him, the renovation project is being handled by the China Communications Construction Company and is expected to be completed ahead of the commencement of the National Sports Festival scheduled for November 27, 2026.


Ekweremadu stated that the ongoing transformation of the stadium forms part of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s broader vision of repositioning Enugu State as a major sporting destination in Nigeria and beyond.


He further revealed that Enugu State is already about 85 to 90 percent ready in terms of accommodation and logistics for over 8,000 athletes and officials expected to participate in the sporting fiesta.


The commissioner also announced that the Enugu City International Marathon would hold on August 30, 2026, as part of efforts to elevate the state’s global sporting profile.


The renovation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is expected to deliver modern sporting facilities capable of hosting national and international competitions, while also boosting youth development, tourism, and economic activities in the state.
