Hon. Chijioke Edeoga’s emergence as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Isu-Uzo/Enugu East Federal Constituency marks a significant moment in the evolving political landscape of Enugu State.

His return to the contest for a seat in Nigeria’s House of Representatives often referred to as the Green Chambers signals both a revival of his legislative ambitions and a test of his enduring political relevance.

Edeoga is not new to federal lawmaking. He first served in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, a period widely regarded as foundational in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. During that time, he carved out a reputation as an active and visible legislator, notably serving as Chairman of the House Committee on Information and acting as spokesperson of the House.

His tenure coincided with the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during which the National Assembly was deeply engaged in debates around executive powers, including the controversial third-term agenda.

Beyond the legislature, Edeoga’s political résumé includes executive experience. He served as Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later as a commissioner in Enugu State under former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

In 2023, he contested the Enugu State governorship election under the Labour Party but was defeated by the incumbent, Peter Mbah. His subsequent return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), followed by his defection alongside Governor Mbah to the APC in October 2025, underscores a dynamic political journey shaped by shifting alliances and strategic recalibrations.

His recent emergence as APC’s consensus candidate has generated mixed reactions. Supporters view his experience and track record as strong assets, while critics question aspects of his past performance, particularly his first stint in the House of Representatives.

Responding to criticisms, especially claims circulated anonymously on social media that he underperformed or abandoned his constituency Edeoga has strongly defended his record.

He maintains that his tenure was marked by “historic” constituency interventions and national legislative impact. According to him, his leadership of the House Committee on Information elevated the profile of his constituency and set standards that successors sought to emulate.

*Edeoga highlights several achievements from his time in office.* These include facilitating employment opportunities for constituents in federal agencies such as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Radio Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria, and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

He also credits himself with influencing the establishment of the NBC office in Enugu and attracting key investments, including relocating the regional headquarters of DSTV to Enugu state moves he says created both direct and indirect employment opportunities.

On infrastructure: he points to projects such as the provision of electricity to Umuaro in Isu-Uzo and the establishment of constituency offices in Eha-Amufu and Nike to maintain grassroots engagement.

He also references legislative motions, including one addressing the poor condition of the Eha-Amufu–Ikem federal road, which he says brought him into confrontation with state authorities at the time.

At the national level, Edeoga emphasizes his role in broader legislative efforts, including early work on the Freedom of Information Bill later enacted into law and participation in the South-East caucus that influenced regional development initiatives.

These include the establishment of the Enugu Trade Fair complex and the creation of a zonal police command in Umuahia, as well as legislative actions related to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

For Edeoga, these accomplishments form the basis of his rebuttal to critics and his appeal to voters. He insists that his record is a matter of public knowledge and invites objective scrutiny.

As the political contest for the Isu-Uzo/Enugu East Federal Constituency unfolds, Edeoga’s candidacy is likely to remain a focal point of debate balancing experience and legacy against the expectations of a new political era.
