Chinecherem, who hails from Achi in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, suffered a life-altering incident as a baby. She was accidentally left in a locked car for nearly seven hours. The intense heat caused severe damage to part of her brain, significantly affecting her cognitive development.
For years, her condition posed a challenge not just to her, but to her family, emotionally, medically, and financially. Her life took a turning point when OneHopeChildren Foundation encountered her at the age of 10 in a church setting. Recognizing her condition and the silent struggle of her family, the foundation stepped in, not with temporary aid, but with a long-term commitment to her healing and development.
Since then, her story has been gradually rewritten. The foundation arranged for her to see a pediatric neurosurgeon, who later referred her to the renowned Memfys Diagnostic Center in Enugu. After thorough evaluations, medications were prescribed to support her cognitive development, expenses fully covered by the foundation.
But the intervention did not stop at medical care. Understanding that her growth required a holistic approach, the foundation engaged her school, exploring options such as enrolling her in a specialized institution or providing access to trained special education professionals who can guide her learning process effectively.
Speaking during the event, Rev. Fr. Prof. Felix Ugwuozor emphasized that Chinecherem’s journey represents the very essence of the foundation’s mission. He noted that her greatest challenge lies in cognitive development, but reassured everyone present that with the right medical attention, specialized education, and emotional support, she can continue to improve step by step.
He explained that the birthday celebration itself was carefully organized to boost her confidence, create joyful memories, and strengthen her emotional well-being, an important part of her healing process.
