_...Describes the act as a stain on humanity and a national disgrace_
The Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) has strongly condemned the tragic death of Mrs. Onyiyechi Okoh, a native of Amurri community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, who reportedly lost her life as a result of domestic violence.
In an official statement jointly signed by the Acting President, Comrade Mrs. Patience Uche-Udo Ezeaku, and the Secretary, Mrs. Chizoba Ezemagu, on Thursday, October 23, 2025, WOSCONET described the incident as “a cruel and heartbreaking act that strikes at the very soul of womanhood and mocks the conscience of a society that should protect its women.”
The organization lamented that the life of a woman who should have been loved, cherished, and protected was instead cut short by violence, stressing that the death of Mrs. Okoh is not only a personal tragedy but a painful reminder of the pervasive and deadly nature of domestic and gender-based violence in Nigeria.
“No woman deserves to die at the hands of anyone, least of all someone she trusted and shared a home with. The death of Mrs. Onyiyechi Okoh is a devastating blow to all mothers, sisters, and daughters across Nigeria. Her death must not be in vain,” the statement read.
WOSCONET commended the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for its strong commitment to justice and the protection of women’s rights, while urging that the full weight of the law be brought upon all those found culpable.
“We appreciate the swift response of the Enugu State Government and security agencies in handling this matter. However, we demand that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Every perpetrator of domestic violence must face the law without compromise or delay,” the group stated.
The women’s network also praised Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the wife of the Governor of Enugu State, for her tireless advocacy and sustained campaign against gender-based violence, describing her as a beacon of hope for women and children across the state.
WOSCONET further called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups to intensify enlightenment campaigns that promote peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and non-violence within families and communities.
“This is a moment for collective action. We call on community leaders, religious heads, and civil society groups to stand with the government to end this scourge. Silence and indifference are no longer options, domestic violence is not a private matter; it is a crime against humanity,” the statement added.
The group extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Amurri community, praying for comfort and strength in their period of grief. It also appealed to women facing abuse to speak out and seek help, assuring them that WOSCONET stands ready to support, defend, and amplify their voices.
“We mourn with the Okoh family and the good people of Amurri. But beyond mourning, we rise in solidarity to say: No more silence. No more blood. No more tears. Every woman deserves to live in peace, safety, and dignity,” the statement concluded.
