In an unscheduled visit that underscores his commitment to infrastructure development, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government, Hon. John Ogbodo, today inspected ongoing construction projects at Eke Agbani Market, including the much-anticipated ultra-modern abattoir, boreholes, and toilet facilities.
Mirroring the visionary leadership of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, this inspection was part of the council's strategic plan to upgrade the market’s infrastructure and improve the living and working conditions of the butchers and traders in the council. Hon. Ogbodo, who assumed office just a few weeks ago, has already initiated the construction of several vital projects, including a state-of-the-art abattoir, which aims to replace the dilapidated and unhygienic facilities that once existed.
“We are committed to improving the welfare of our people. Just a few weeks after assuming office, I made a promise to the butchers and traders here at Eke Agbani Market, and we have delivered on that promise. The old slaughterhouse was not only an eyesore but also unsafe for its purpose. Our modern facility will change all that,” Ogbodo said, addressing journalists during the visit.
The new abattoir will come with modern amenities, including a borehole to provide clean water for butchers and a proper sanitation system. Also, two toilet facilitiesbone for males and one for females will be constructed to put an end to the unsanitary practice of open defecation at the market. The provision of clean water through a solar-powered borehole for both the abattoir and the market is a significant milestone in Ogbodo's commitment to improving public health in the local government.
Hon. Ogbodo’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Recall that on the 24th of September, 2024, members of the Eke Agbani Market Traders’ Association, led by Chief Ikechukwu Ani, and the Butchers’ Association, headed by Mr. Ikechukwu Ogbodo, had visited the chairman to express their gratitude. They appreciated his swift action and transparency in delivering on his promises.
Chief Ani, on behalf of the traders, expressed: “The old abattoir was in a terrible state. It was unhygienic, and the facilities were inadequate. We thank the Chairman for coming to our rescue with this new project. The boreholes, the toilets, and the modern abattoir will significantly improve our working conditions.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Ikechukwu Ogbodo of the Butchers’ Association praised the chairman as a “man of action,” saying, “We believe in what you promised, and you have delivered. You have proven that we can trust you.”
The Nkanu West Chairman emphasized that the success of these projects was made possible by the visionary leadership of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah. “Governor Mbah's commitment to infrastructure development has inspired us at the local government level. His work is contagious, and we are following in his footsteps to ensure that our people benefit from better facilities and services,” he said.
Hon. Ogbodo further revealed that the Nkanu West Local Government is also working on other infrastructure projects, including the construction of a motor park at Ozalla Four Corners, with clearing work and culvert construction already completed. This park is set to facilitate smooth transportation, particularly for trailers and other large vehicles.
“We are also working on more projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for our people. Governor Mbah's transformational projects across Enugu State, including the International Conference Center and Smart Green Schools, have served as a model for us. Our goal is to replicate his success here in Nkanu West,” Ogbodo added.
The leadership of the Eke Agbani Market, the traders, and the butchers expressed hope for a better future as they looked forward to the completion of the abattoir, the borehole, and the toilets. These projects are expected to significantly improve the sanitation, safety, and overall functioning of the market, bringing long-awaited relief to its occupants.
Hon. Ogbodo reiterated his commitment to his people and promised more transformative projects in the coming months. With the continued support of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, Ogbodo is determined to bring positive change to Nkanu West Local Government.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that every promise we made to our people is fulfilled. Together, we are creating a brighter future for Nkanu West,” Ogbodo assured the public.
The Chairman went on this inspection tour in the company of his deputy, Hon. Engr. Friday Nnam, Secretary to the local government, Prince Onochie Igwesi, Chief Security Officer, Hon. Ozoemena Nwobodo Agbo, Town Engineer, Mrs. Nwobodo and other local government functionaries.
