The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has announced plans to commence an indefinite strike on February 11 due to unresolved welfare issues.
The union, in a letter signed by its Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, sought approval for the strike action from the national body. The letter was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday.
The union's grievances include the non-payment of five months' salaries from May to September 2022, the withholding of 60% of September 2017 salaries, and unpaid Earned Academic Allowances from 2015 to 2020. Other concerns include non-remittance of pensions from 2009 to 2019, unpaid promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, and the non-payment of Group Life Insurance for deceased staff since 2020.
The lecturers also recalled their meeting with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, during which the governor had promised to settle the outstanding payments. Despite follow-up appeals, including one on January 17, 2025, no payment has been made.
Due to the lack of action from the government, the union has decided to proceed with the indefinite strike starting February 11.
