The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council (JCC) Enugu State Chapter recently paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, the Honourable Member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, to familiarize with him and to present the NANS Pinnacle Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the educational sector and his developmental strides in his constituency.
During the visit, the students highlighted Hon. Atu's significant achievements, including his active role in the passage of educational bills before the National Assembly, his provision of over 230 SSCE scholarships to SS3 students within his constituency, and his involvement in the rehabilitation of the first primary school in Enugu Town, Coal Camp. Other noteworthy contributions included the furnishing of the Industrial Chemistry Laboratory at ESUT (Enugu State University of Science and Technology) and the training of over 70 youths in renewable energy installation and maintenance. These achievements, accomplished within just two years in office, have made a lasting impact on the lives of many students and young people in Enugu State.
Receiving the Pinnacle Award, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu expressed his deep gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized that the work he does is a responsibility he feels deeply committed to, and it is not something he sees as extraordinary. As the elected representative of the people, he believes it is his duty to serve, improve lives, and work for the collective good. Hon. Atu stated that his motivation is rooted in a clear understanding that his mandate is not a personal one, but one granted by the people to effect positive change. Misusing that power for personal gain would be an affront to those he represents.
He further emphasized that his drive to remain blameless in all his endeavors is a crucial factor in the decisions he makes. He highlighted that he remains committed to the promise of changing the narrative for the better and working diligently to avoid being associated with those who fail the people.
The Chairman of NANS JCC Enugu State, Comrade Ali Cajethan C, poured out his admiration for Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu’s leadership style, which is focused on addressing the true needs of his people. He recounted the various educational bills initiated by Hon. Atu, such as the establishment of a School of Skills Acquisition, a Military Academy, and a Federal School of Nursing and Midwifery in Enugu State. These initiatives, along with the scholarship programs and other student-centered projects, have demonstrated Hon. Atu’s dedication to improving education and creating opportunities for young people.
Comrade Ali also shared his personal experience of benefiting from a scholarship during his secondary school days, further underscoring the significance of such programs. He passionately called for Hon. Atu to be the grand patron and voice of the students in the National Assembly, as well as to establish a mentorship program and leadership masterclasses to help guide the next generation of leaders.
In response to the students' requests, Hon. Atu graciously agreed to serve as the students' grand patron and to support their leadership development initiatives. However, he requested that the students submit a charter of demands and a program of events to assess their authenticity before committing to further collaboration.
The Honourable Member also offered valuable advice to the student leaders, urging them to always prioritize the interests of those they represent. He quoted, “When you fight for the interest of others, other people will be fighting for your own interests, but when you fight for just yourself, you may likely not emerge victorious.” This wisdom highlighted the importance of selflessness and service to others in leadership roles.
He concluded by urging the students to engage constructively with government agencies, supporting good works while also addressing issues that fall short of justice, equity, and reason.
The meeting between the NANS JCC Enugu State Chapter and Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu proved to be a productive and inspiring session. With an agreement for further collaboration, the students look forward to working together with Hon. Atu to continue the great strides being made in education and youth empowerment in Enugu State. The Honourable Member’s unwavering commitment to his people, particularly the students, serves as a model for future leaders and reinforces the importance of genuine public service.
