A proposal to amend the United States Constitution and allow former President Donald Trump to serve a third term has been introduced by Representative Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.). The amendment seeks to revise the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits U.S. presidents to two terms in office.
The proposed amendment would state that no person could be elected to the presidency more than three times, nor could they serve more than two consecutive terms. It also specifies that if someone has acted as president for more than two years of a term someone else was elected to, they cannot be elected to the presidency more than twice.
Rep. Ogles praised Trump’s leadership, contrasting it with the current state of the nation under President Joe Biden. He argued that Trump’s leadership was key to reversing what he viewed as America’s decline, stating that the former president "must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal."
Trump, during a recent meeting with House GOP lawmakers, joked about running for a third term, saying, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something.” He added, “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’” However, many lawmakers, including Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), dismissed his comments as a joke.
Earlier, Trump had publicly stated that he had no intention of seeking a third term, expressing his desire to serve a second term and “bring the country back” during an interview with Time magazine. He emphasized his goal of bringing the U.S. back on track without pursuing a challenge for a third term.
Rep. Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, also praised Trump’s recent executive actions, stating that the former president had already taken steps to undo the policies of the Biden administration, aiming to strengthen the country.
The proposed amendment continues to generate debates, with many questioning whether such a constitutional change could gain traction.
