100 Days of Transformational Leadership: Barr. Ukwueze Setting New Standard in Igbo-Eze South

8th January, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his administration, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Chairman and ALGON Deputy Chairman, Enugu State chapter has demonstrated commitment to excellence in governance in his first 100 days as the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area. Through his visionary Progress Agenda, the Ukwueze administration has delivered measurable improvements across key sectors, earning widespread commendation from the people of the LGA and beyond.

INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT:

The Ukwueze administration has prioritised infrastructural development as a cornerstone of its governance agenda. Under his leadership, over 100 kilometres of roads are being graded and stabilised across all four development centres of Igbo-Eze South. 98 kilometres of these ongoing road projects have been completed, and has significantly enhanced accessibility and economic connectivity, creating a lasting impact on the lives of residents and businesses alike.

RESTORATION OF ELECTRICITY TO COMMUNITIES IN NEED

Electricity restoration has been a key focus of the administration’s intervention efforts. In Ovoko-Agu and Ulunya Ovoko, months of darkness have been brought to an end through targeted actions by the council. Similarly, in Alor-Agu, a community that suffered over three years of power outage, the administration successfully rectified transformer issues, leading to the restoration of electricity. These initiatives speak volumes about the Chairman’s determination to deliver essential services to his people.

ADDRESSING WATER SCARCITY THROUGH INNOVATION

The Ukwueze administration has also taken decisive steps to address water challenges within the LGA. This includes the successful repair of a borehole in Alor-Agu, ensuring that the community has access to clean and reliable water supplies, thereby improving overall public health and wellbeing.

RECONSTRUCTION OF IGBO-EZE SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT SECRETARIAT AND ENVIRONS

In line with the vision of creating a more efficient and conducive working environment, the Igbo-Eze South Local Government Secretariat is undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction. The project, which will transform the Secretariat into an ultramodern facility equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, reflects the administration’s focus on fostering good governance.

Additionally, the ongoing reconstruction of the Ibagwa-Aka-Itchi Junction Roundabout is designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the council headquarters, offering a new face to the council.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SKILLS ACQUISITION

Barr. Ukwueze’s administration is actively implementing the One-Youth One-Skill initiative, aimed at equipping every youth in Igbo-Eze South with marketable skills. The Youth Development and Welfare Committee, set up by the administration, has provided a detailed report outlining strategies to achieve this ambitious vision.

Furthermore, the much anticipated landmark partnership with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) will position Igbo-Eze South as the premier skill acquisition hub in Enugu North Senatorial Zone. The administration is already prepared to utilise a world-class training facility, generously donated by Alh. Dr. Jimoh Rauf Badamosi, to provide young people with hands-on training in various trades.

Complementing these efforts is a collaboration with Jobberman and the MasterCard Foundation, which has facilitated the training of over 500 young women in essential soft skills, and about 250 participants are already scheduled for employment. This holistic approach to youth empowerment is a proof of the administration’s commitment to reducing unemployment and fostering economic self-reliance.

ENHANCING SECURITY AND PUBLIC SAFETY

Security remains a top priority for the Ukwueze administration. By providing modern equipment and adequate funding to local security agencies, the council has strengthened its security architecture to protect lives and property.

One of the most notable achievements in this regard was the successful rescue of Miss Mmesoma, a young girl kidnapped in Ovoko. In collaboration with the state government, the administration facilitated her safe recovery from a hideout in Anambra State. The perpetrators of this heinous act have been apprehended and are currently facing the full wrath of the law.

REVAMPING MARKET MANAGEMENT AND REVENUE GENERATION

In a bold move to improve infrastructure and revenue generation in local markets, the Ukwueze administration has dissolved all previously existing market committees, unions, and revenue-collecting bodies. Markets such as Orie Igbo-Eze, Nkwo Ibagwa, Afor Unadu and others are undergoing restructuring to ensure transparency and efficiency in their management.

SOCIAL WELFARE FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE

Demonstrating a deep commitment to the welfare of the less privileged, the Ukwueze administration recently distributed over 500 bags of rice to indigent residents across the 16 wards of the LGA. This act of generosity portrays the Chairman’s dedication to fostering a more inclusive and caring society.

A PROMISE OF CONTINUED EXCELLENCE

Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze’s first 100 days in office have been defined by impactful leadership, innovative initiatives, and a clear commitment to the welfare of the people. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, security, youth empowerment, and social services, the Chairman has laid a solid foundation for sustainable progress in Igbo-Eze South.

The people of Igbo-Eze South can look forward to even greater strides in development and governance. With Barr. Ukwueze at the helm, the local government is poised to set a benchmark for excellence across Enugu State and beyond.
