The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly distanced itself from Simon Ekpa, a figure who has declared himself the Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE). This separation comes in light of Ekpa's recent arrest in Finland, where he, along with four others, was apprehended on serious allegations connected to terrorism.
Finnish authorities reported that Ekpa's arrest was made on suspicions of "public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent." The additional arrests involved individuals accused of financing these purportedly terror-linked activities. In the aftermath of these events, IPOB spoke out, firmly rejecting any claims that Ekpa had ties to their movement.
In a heartfelt statement, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful emphasized, “To set the records straight, Simon Ekpa has never been a member of the global IPOB family movement.” The group reacted strongly against media narratives, especially those echoed by the BBC, suggesting Ekpa had a legitimate role within IPOB. They clarified that he is not recognized as a member of any of their units, whether in Finland or anywhere else around the world.
At its core, IPOB positions itself as a peaceful advocacy group, established by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, focused on seeking Biafra's independence through dialogue and democratic means, including calls for a referendum under international supervision. They have consistently upheld non-violence as a fundamental principle, despite facing provocations over the years from various Nigerian authorities.
With genuine concern for their community, IPOB accused Ekpa of enlisting violent criminals, claiming his actions aimed at destabilizing the South East region have betrayed the hopes of many Biafrans who desire a peaceful resolution. “It’s heartbreaking that some in our community believed he was truly committed to our cause," Powerful lamented. "They have since learned that he poses a threat to the very movement they cherish.”
The statement described Ekpa and the BRGIE as a “small criminally minded group,” involved in violent incidents that have harmed innocent civilians, directly contradicting IPOB’s mission for peace and self-determination.
IPOB’s release further emphasized the damaging consequences resulting from the conflation of Ekpa's violent actions with the broader aims of their movement. They articulated a strong plea to the media and the Finnish authorities to recognize that Ekpa's beliefs do not reflect those of the peaceful IPOB community.
IPOB called on its supporters to remain calm and focused, reminding them of their unwavering goal: the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra. They acknowledged the complexities of Ekpa’s legal situation but advised their members and supporters to remain steadfast in their mission, even as they navigate this turbulent chapter.
