The Federal Government has released funds to settle outstanding salaries owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Federal Universities and to pay benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
In an official statement released Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed that payments to NASU members have commenced, with many recipients confirming the funds have been received.
The statement highlighted the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to ensure the well-being of Nigerian workers and retirees, stating, “The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salaries of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities." Furthermore, it was confirmed that retirees’ benefits under the contributory pension scheme have also been addressed.
This financial relief comes amid an indefinite strike embarked upon by the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and NASU. The unions began the strike on Monday over four months of unpaid salaries, which have severely disrupted university operations across the nation.
Earlier this week, in an interview, the National President of SSANU, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, explained that key university personnel, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, were among those affected by the pay freeze. Ibrahim affirmed that university closures would persist until the withheld salaries were disbursed.
The recent disbursement marks a critical step in restoring stability within federal universities, as the Federal Government continues to address labor concerns and strengthen employee welfare.
