The Enugu State Government, under the guidance of the First Lady, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has taken significant strides in raising awareness about the effects of climate change, especially among the youth. This initiative underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackling environmental issues that also considers economic growth and sustainability.
Mrs. Mbah advocated for this dual focus at the Award Presentation Ceremony held for winners of Enugu State’s inaugural essay competition on climate change, themed, “What measures can Enugu State take to address climate change while promoting economic growth, and what role can the youth play in this process.” The event was organized by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, led by Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, alongside the Ministries of Youth and Sports, Education, and Environment.
Representing Mrs. Mbah, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, highlighted the pressing nature of climate change, pointing to irregular weather patterns, soil degradation, and reduced agricultural yields already affecting Enugu State. She outlined key steps that could mitigate these challenges, such as promoting sustainable agriculture, investing in renewable energy, strengthening environmental governance, and advocating for policy changes. Mrs. Enih emphasized that a direct approach to climate change would foster long-term economic benefits, contributing to a sustainable future for all residents of the state.
Prof. Okereke, in his remarks, affirmed that the initiative would be an annual event aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility in young people, encouraging them to actively participate in government policies and programs, particularly those targeting climate change. He urged the competition’s winners to see themselves as ambassadors for Enugu State, playing a key role in sensitizing the public and building widespread awareness about climate action.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Chijioke Ugwu, and his Education counterpart, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, further reiterated the significance of youth involvement. They noted that this competition is part of a larger awareness campaign to transform students into climate activists, with climate change awareness now integrated into the educational curriculum across the state.
The event also featured goodwill messages from Hon. Obiajulu Ugwu, the member representing Enugu South Rural in the State House of Assembly; Dr. Mara Huber, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Innovation; and Dr. Maxwell Ngene, Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). Each speaker applauded the Governor's efforts in advancing environmental and educational initiatives, particularly in the face of global climate challenges.
The essay competition concluded with Chukwuebuka Onyia emerging as the overall winner, receiving a cash prize of 250,000 Naira. Chinaza Arinze secured the second position with a prize of 150,000 Naira, while Cynthia Ani came third, awarded 100,000 Naira. The winners expressed gratitude to the organizers, commending the fair and transparent process devoid of political interference, reflecting the governor’s inclusive leadership.
This initiative is a testament to Enugu State's commitment to environmental protection and the empowerment of its youth, positioning them at the forefront of the fight against climate change.
