The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) secured an overwhelming victory in the Abia State local government elections held on November 2, clinching 15 out of the 17 Local Government Areas, while the Young Peoples Party (YPP) triumphed in the remaining two LGAs. This result was officially announced by the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. George Chima, at the commission's headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.
Prof. Chima emphasized the commission's dedication to its mandate, describing the election as a significant achievement. “We have fulfilled the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to carry out,” he stated. Reflecting on the commission's efforts, he acknowledged the challenges they faced, highlighting the extensive outreach and awareness initiatives undertaken to ensure a successful election process across the state.
This election was notable for its inclusivity, with over 12 political parties participating—a milestone Prof. Chima described as unprecedented for the commission in recent years. The electoral process was conducted across all 17 LGAs of Abia State and was characterized as “free, fair, and credible.”
Completing a complex task within two months—a process typically requiring six to twelve months—Prof. Chima commended the efficiency of the commission. He extended congratulations to the election winners and also acknowledged the role of the opposition, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and unity in Abia. “In any election, there are winners and losers, but the most important thing is that Abia remains peaceful. I urge everyone to uphold this peace,” he advised.
Prof. Chima expressed gratitude to security agencies for their vital support in ensuring a safe electoral process. He also praised political parties for adhering to the rules, a gesture that contributed to the smooth conduct of the elections.
