The tragic death of Mr. Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbojaa, has stirred significant outrage and a resounding call for accountability among the people of Enugu and beyond. In a press release issued by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Enugu State chapter, the Council condemned the actions of police officers that led to this devastating incident and urged a full investigation into the matter.
According to the NYCN, Igbojaa’s death resulted from an accidental discharge of a stray bullet, reportedly from an officer's firearm. This incident has reignited concerns over the conduct and accountability of law enforcement personnel, specifically regarding the reckless handling of firearms by some officers.
In a firm statement, the NYCN highlighted that “recklessness” involves a conscious disregard for the safety and rights of others—a behavior that, in this case, escalated to an unacceptable level. Unlike negligence, recklessness implies a deliberate choice to engage in risky behavior despite being fully aware of potential consequences. The Council emphasized that this is precisely why punitive damages are sometimes awarded in cases of severe misconduct: to deter similar actions and penalize the individuals involved.
The National Youth Council has called upon both the Inspector General of Police and the Enugu State Commissioner of Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation, ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. The statement from the Council underlined that “taxpayer money should not be squandered on ineffective training or inadequate accountability measures, especially when it concerns something as critical as law enforcement.”
The NYCN expressed deep sorrow over the impact of this senseless tragedy on Igbojaa’s family, who now face an uncertain future without their loved one. “The fate of Igbojaa’s family now hangs in the balance, and it’s heartbreaking to think about the impact of this senseless tragedy on his loved ones,” read the statement. This tragic incident, they argued, serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that law enforcement officers bear in safeguarding the community’s welfare.
Comrade Bartholomew Ebuka Olkoh JP, Chairman of NYCN Enugu, urged the community to demand justice, stressing that “as a community, we must demand better from those sworn to protect and serve.” The Council’s statement underscores a commitment to ensuring that the memory of Igbojaa prompts meaningful reform in law enforcement practices, preventing future incidents and preserving the rights and lives of citizens.
