Enugu New Yam Festival: Uzo-Uwani Showcases Rich Cultural Heritage with Agricultural Prowess

The Executive Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Ezugwu, led his council to a remarkable showing at the just-concluded Enugu State Annual New Yam Festival, held on October 12, 2024, at Okpara Square in Enugu. The event, hosted by the Enugu State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, attracted participants from across the 17 LGAs of the state.

Uzo-Uwani LGA, renowned for its agricultural strength, made a grand impression by displaying giant tubers of yam, showcasing its agricultural prowess. The impressive display underscored the LGA's deep connection to agriculture, which has long been the backbone of the region's economy and a source of pride for its people.

Barr. Chijioke Ezugwu was accompanied by a high-profile delegation, including Hon. Kingsley Ani, PDP Chairman of the LGA; Dr. Chonoso Anigbo, Permanent Secretary; Hon. Chief John Offor, a former State Party Exco of the PDP; Dr. Barth Nwankwo, former Senior Special Assistant to the former governor; and Prince Emeka Oroko, former Chief of Staff to the former Chairman of Uzo-Uwani LGA. The delegation was further bolstered by councilors from the 16 wards of the LGA, Ada-Igbo and her Queens, Hon. Ifeanyi Utazi, former Senior Personal Assistant to the former chairman, and other distinguished figures.

The festival provided a platform for local governments to showcase their diverse cultural heritage and foster peaceful co-existence among the people of Enugu State. This annual event celebrates the significance of the yam as a symbol of prosperity, unity, and abundance, and highlights the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

Governor Peter Mbah, though unavoidably absent, was represented by his deputy, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, who applauded the efforts of the LGAs and reiterated the state's commitment to promoting culture and agriculture.

Uzo-Uwani LGA has long prided itself on its agricultural legacy, and the 2024 New Yam Festival offered a unique opportunity to highlight this strength. The event reaffirmed the LGA’s standing as a leader in agricultural production, while also celebrating its rich cultural traditions, reinforcing its unique identity within Enugu State.
