A tragic incident has shocked the residents of Agu-Uwani, Akwuke, in Enugu South Local Government Area, after three children from the same family tragically lost their lives due to suspected food poisoning. The children, belonging to Mr. Callistus Egbo, a school proprietor, consumed beans purchased from the popular Garriki Market, sparking fears over the safety of food sold in the area.
According to sources, the family consumed the beans on Tuesday evening, after which the children fell ill. Sadly, one child died that same night, while the other two succumbed to the illness the following day, Wednesday. Mr. Egbo, the father, is also reported to be critically ill and is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Enugu. His wife was out of town at the time of the incident.
The victims’ father, Mr. Egbo, is well-known in the community as the proprietor of Elohim Primary and Secondary School in Agu-Uwani, and he hails from Nenwe in Aninri Local Government Area. The cause of death is widely suspected to be food poisoning, though an official medical report has yet to be released.
The incident has caused widespread alarm, leading to fears about the safety of beans sold in local markets. Many residents have refrained from buying or consuming beans or related foods such as akara (bean cakes) and moi moi (steamed bean pudding). “Since the tragedy occurred, nobody in our area is eating beans or anything made from beans,” a local resident reported.
The tragic deaths have underscored the urgent need for improved food safety measures in the region, raising questions about the inspection and handling of food sold in public markets. Despite the seriousness of the situation, neither the state government nor law enforcement agencies have made an official statement regarding the incident.
Efforts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls. However, in conversation with some journalists, Ndukwe reportedly stated, “Did they report the incident to the police? I have not gotten such a report.”
As the community mourns the tragic loss, prayers are being offered for the recovery of Mr. Egbo and for the family to find strength in this difficult time. Residents are also calling for swift action from the authorities to prevent future occurrences of such devastating incidents.
This heartbreaking event has once again highlighted the critical importance of food safety, and the need for stringent regulation to protect consumers, especially in local markets that serve as vital sources of daily sustenance for families across the state.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace!
