Enugu State Govt Demolishes New Artisan Market, Cites Criminal Activities

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) has taken decisive action against the New Artisan Market, citing its transformation into a hub for criminal activities. The market, which was once known for its vibrant trade in cow meat, foodstuffs, and the popular delicacy suya, had over time become a notorious hideout for armed robbers, kidnappers, and other criminal elements.

The demolition, carried out on Wednesday, was part of a broader government strategy to restore peace and security in the region. According to Hon. Uche Anya, Chairman of the ECTDA, the market had evolved far beyond its original purpose, becoming a breeding ground for various forms of illegal activities. “This is no ordinary market,” Anya remarked during a press briefing. “It has become a haven for armed robbers, kidnappers, and the trafficking of illegal weapons. There are even cells for kidnappers hidden within its walls.”

Hon. Anya expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation, noting that while the market still housed legitimate businesses, the dangers posed by illicit operations such as brothels, kidnapper dens, and drug trafficking could no longer be ignored. “No serious government can condone what has transpired at New Artisan Market,” he stated, emphasizing that the decision to demolish the market was made in the best interest of public safety.

The ECTDA Chairman acknowledged that previous administrations had made attempts to address the issues at the New Artisan Market but assured that the current government is committed to ensuring that such a situation never arises again. “This place will never exist in its former state again,” Anya declared, signaling a firm stance on the matter.

In a move to support legitimate traders affected by the demolition, Anya announced that the government has plans to relocate them to a more suitable environment. He revealed that discussions are already underway with the leaders of the market to facilitate a smooth transition for the cow meat traders and other lawful businesses.

The demolition of the New Artisan Market marks a significant step in the Enugu State Government's efforts to combat crime and enhance the safety of its citizens. The ECTDA's actions have been met with mixed reactions from the public, but the government maintains that the move was necessary to dismantle the criminal networks that had taken root in the area.
