Enugu: Gunmen Abduct 11 Students, Passengers in Enugu, Demand N30 Million Ransom

Gunmen have abducted 11 passengers, including several tertiary institution students, at the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway. This area has become increasingly notorious for such incidents.

The abduction occurred on Tuesday when the assailants intercepted a commercial bus traveling from Awka, Anambra State, to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. The victims, among them students from tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State, were taken at gunpoint in Nkanu East Local Government Area, a location that has recently seen a surge in kidnappings.

A relative of one of the victims, speaking under the condition of anonymity, revealed that the kidnappers have contacted the families, demanding a ransom of N30 million to release the abducted passengers. This staggering amount highlights the severity of the crisis and the desperation of the kidnappers.

Joshua Ukandu, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the Enugu State Police Command is aware of the incident and is actively working to address the situation. He further noted that the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, is collaborating closely with her Enugu counterpart, Kanayo Uzuegbu, to combat the increasing frequency of kidnappings along this highway.

In response to the growing insecurity, Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to eradicate the criminal activities plaguing the area. The governor's directive comes amid widespread concern and fear among residents and travelers who use this route.

Despite the immediate response from security agencies, the Enugu State Police Command has yet to issue an official confirmation of the abduction. This delay has fueled anxiety among the families of the victims, who are eager for swift action and reassurance.

As efforts to rescue the victims continue, the community remains on edge, hoping for a resolution that will bring their loved ones back safely. The demand for a N30 million ransom underscores the urgent need for effective measures to tackle the kidnapping epidemic that has taken root in this region.

The incident highlights the broader issue of security in Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become a pervasive threat. It underscores the need for enhanced security measures and a coordinated effort by state and federal authorities to protect citizens and restore confidence in the safety of public spaces.

The situation remains tense, with the affected families and the wider community anxiously awaiting the safe return of the abducted passengers.
