BREAKING: Enugu State Gov't Cracks Down on Illegal Syndicate Extorting Motorists ...Arrests Touts Impersonating MOT

In a bid to curb the incessant extortion of motorists by an illegal syndicate along the Abakpa/Trans Ekulu axis in Enugu State, the Enugu State Government has taken stringent measures.

This action follows multiple complaints of extortion by an illegal task force claiming to be working for the Enugu State Ministry of Transport, particularly at the Enugu-East Central Development Centre. The investigation, led by security agencies in collaboration with officers from the Enugu State Ministry of Transportation, revealed the extent of the illegal operation, FountainCare correspondents reported.

The illegal task force, led by Mr. Ugwuede Mathew (also known as Mountain), alleged that the State Board of Internal Revenue (ESIRS) through RTEAN had commissioned them to carry out enforcement in the area. However, investigations proved this claim to be false.

Officials from the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) and the Ministry of Transport promptly swung into action upon receiving this information.

Seven impersonators, including Ephraim Eze, Aniagu Emmanuel, Udeh Ekene, Mbamanu Anthony, Michael Okechukwu, Eze Chukwuebuka, and Joseph Chime, were apprehended. According to FountainCare Reporters, they were arrested alongside a tricycle used for their illegal operations. Several items, including number plates, offence sheets, fake government receipts, and other paraphernalia used for illegal activities, were seized from the suspects.

Reacting to the incident, the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Dr. Obi Ozor, reiterated the government's commitment to eradicating touts from all routes within and outside Enugu metropolis. He assured residents of Enugu State of professionalism in all government conduct.

He also urged motorists to report all forms of illegal collection and touting to the appropriate authorities or the nearest police station for immediate action.

The apprehended suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation, and the government promises to continue its efforts to ensure the safety and security of motorists and residents in Enugu State.
