Enugu Hospital Holds Mother of Triplets Hostage Over Unsettled N352,350 Delivery Bill

Praise and Grace Maternity Hospital in Enugu North Council Area has detained Mrs. Joan Orajiobi and her newborn triplets due to an outstanding delivery bill of N352,350. Mrs. Orajiobi, a resident of Ologo Quarters, Uwani Enugu, gave birth to two girls and a boy via Caesarian Section on New Year's Day.

Despite being discharged on January 8, the family remains in the hospital as they struggle to settle the total bill of N482,350, of which only N130,000 has been paid by her husband, Mr. Cornelius Orajiobi, a trader from Obiofia in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Mrs. Orajiobi, a hairdresser, expressed her plea for assistance, especially from the governors of Enugu and Anambra States, urging Nigerians and organizations to help alleviate their financial burden. She disclosed her husband's Access Account details for potential well-wishers to contribute.

“Anybody that is touched by our condition can reach and assist us through my husband’s Access Account Number 0043854232, Account Name : Nchekwube Orajiobi C. and his WhatsApp 08065846537" she said.

Highlighting the challenging situation, Mr. Orajiobi appealed for support, emphasizing that the joy of having triplets is marred by the financial strain. The couple is grappling not only with the medical bill but also with the daunting responsibility of raising three infants.

Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Shedrack Emeribe, defended the decision to detain the family, stating that the operation was conducted without an initial deposit. He clarified that the husband made a deposit of N60,000 four days after the Caesarian Section, eventually reaching N130,000. Dr. Emeribe justified the bill, encompassing surgery, theatre, drug fees, and hospital services, emphasizing the necessity of saving lives despite the financial challenges faced by the family.

The Orajiobi family's plea for assistance echoes the broader issue of healthcare accessibility and affordability, shedding light on the struggles faced by many in meeting the cost of essential medical services..
