In a strategic move towards prioritizing the welfare of children, the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, officially reconstituted the Children’s Parliament. A step towards enhance child welfar, according to the Commissioner.
Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, welcomed the children at the colorful event, emphasizing the crucial role children play in society's sustainability. She applauded the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah for his commitment to child protection and zero tolerance for all forms of child abuse.
Mrs. Enih highlighted the enforcement of relevant laws, including the Enugu State Child’s Right Law, 2016, and the Law Prohibiting Violence against Persons, 2019. She urged stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, school heads, and others to collaborate in eradicating child abuse.
In the same vein, the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Nkechi Ewoh, commended the Commissioner's efforts and noted that the Ministry had been actively campaigning against child abuse through various advocacy programs. Issues raised by the reconstituted Children's Parliament were addressed, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to child welfare.
Mrs. Clementina Ogbu, Head of Child Welfare Department, encouraged children to report abuse promptly. The Legal Officer, Barr Uzoamaka A. Akpa, provided a detailed briefing on the Child's Rights Law, educating children on their rights and responsibilities.
Addressing the Children, Barr Chidinma Okwuowulu of the Ministry of Justice and Enugu State Justice Reform Team, commended the efforts of the ministry while urging to also in their own part obey their parents, employ orderly manners and comply with the rule of the law.
Miss Jennifer Ezeji and Miss Adaeze Ndu expressed gratitude in their votes of thanks, praising the Ministry for its care and the revival of the Children’s Parliament. The event's highlights included dancing, refreshments, and the sharing of gifts, marking a joyous celebration of a renewed commitment to the well-being of Enugu State's children.
