The national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed all its members across the country to cease their services starting from Monday midnight until further notice. This directive, issued by ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, aligns with the initial call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a nationwide industrial action.
President Osodeke emphasized that ASUU, as an affiliate of NLC, is obligated to stand in solidarity with other workers in safeguarding their collective interests. This decision follows an in-depth assessment of the nation's economic crisis during a two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Kaduna State University on Sunday, November 12, 2023.
Expressing strong dissatisfaction with the prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria, ASUU underscores the need for unified action to address the issues at hand. President Osodeke urged all ASUU leadership at zone and branch levels to promptly mobilize their members, stating, "a people united cannot be defeated."
As a result, university lecturers under ASUU join the nationwide strike, adding their voice to the ongoing efforts to address the economic concerns facing the nation. The move signals a united front among various labor unions in advocating for improved conditions and economic stability. The impact of this joint action on the nation's education sector and broader economy remains to be seen as stakeholders closely monitor the situation.
