The Enugu State government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, is taking significant steps to address crime and insecurity within the state. In a move to revamp and strengthen the role of neighbourhood watch groups, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, has embarked on a comprehensive sensitization tour across the 17 local government areas of the state.
During his recent visits to Uzo Uwani and Ezeagu local government areas, Commissioner Agbo highlighted the primary objective of these tours: to reform and reinvigorate neighbourhood watch groups for enhanced effectiveness. He expressed concern that these groups had not fully delivered on their promises made during their inauguration, leading to continued issues like kidnapping and armed robbery within local communities.
Commissioner Agbo called on members of the neighbourhood watch groups to approach their duties with renewed enthusiasm and dedication. He stressed the importance of collaboration with the police and other law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer environment for all residents.
Dr. Agbo acknowledged the neighborhood watch groups' efforts in securing the state despite facing numerous challenges while on duty.
In response, Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie, the Chairman of Uzo Uwani local government area, expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah for initiating these reforms, recognizing their potential to bolster security within the state.
Similarly, Hon. Chukwudi Ozoeluba, the Chairman of Ezeagu Local Government Area, extended his profound appreciation to the governor for implementing new measures aimed at enhancing security throughout Enugu State.
As these reforms take shape, the government remains committed to working closely with neighbourhood watch groups to create a safer and more secure environment for all residents of the state.
