The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert, predicting heavy rainfall in twenty-five states along with the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, September 28, and Friday, September 29. This forecast comes with a significant risk of flash floods.

The states earmarked to encounter heavy rainfall are Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Abia. Additionally, NiMet's forecast includes Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated.

NiMet advises the public that the rest of the country should expect very light or no rainfall during this period. Furthermore, the agency emphasizes that strong winds pose a threat to vulnerable structures, trees, and communication masts. NiMet urges residents in affected states to disconnect electrical appliances before the rainfall, not during.

The agency cautions that the expected moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in affected areas. NiMet also warns of strong winds accompanying the rain, with the highest wind speeds expected in parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi.

In light of these forecasts, NiMet issues a stern warning to the public, especially drivers, not to attempt driving through surface runoff waters, as they may have powerful undercurrents. Hazards to be mindful of include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during heavy rain, which can disrupt road traffic. NiMet strongly advises against driving through such surface water, prioritizing safety for all road users.

Residents in the affected states are encouraged to stay vigilant, take necessary precautions, and heed NiMet's weather advisories during these rainy days to ensure their safety and the safety of their property.
