Women Groups Congratulate Senator Uche Ekwunife on her Appointment as the Director-General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF)


In a show of solidarity and support, two prominent women's groups have extended their heartfelt congratulations to former Senator Uche Lilian Ekwunife on her recent appointment as the Director-General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF), two months after leaving her Senate seat. The Anambra Women General Assembly (AWGA), a sociocultural women's group focused on promoting women's participation in governance, and the Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET), a global women's civil society organization, jointly expressed their felicitations.

The announcement came through a joint statement signed by representatives of the leadership from both AWGA and WOSCONET.

The appointment is a well deserved one as our dear queentesetial woman who have served meritoriously in both the Federal House of Representatives and Senate. During your time in the National Assembly, you're the most active female Senator in the upper chamber. You also served as Chairman Senate Committee on Science and Technology.


You are an embodiment of giving and empathy especially to the indigent and the poorest of the poor and your philanthropy is legendary. For you, the people always come first in your priority of responsibilities.

As the Director-General of the SEGOF, the former Senator representing Anambra Central, Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), will be overseeing the activities of SEGOF, the coordinating body for the governors of the five states in Nigeria's South-East geopolitical zone, namely Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, and Abia States.


In her new role, Senator Ekwunife will oversee the Forum's Secretariat in Enugu and collaborate with the five governors to pursue common objectives. Ekwunife brings with her significant experience as both a technocrat and politician, having served as a former top bank executive and represented the Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. She later served as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District on two occasions.


Governor Hope Uzodinma, who recently assumed the chairmanship of the South East Governors Forum, aims to reunite the Governors, inject new energy into the organization, and position it as a platform to impact the region's social, political, and economic affairs. With Ekwunife leading the Secretariat, the Forum will function as a resource hub, facilitating the pooling of ideas and resources among the South-East governors to tackle common socio-economic challenges and undertake projects that will enhance the wellbeing of the region's people.
