Enugu Mourns as Supreme Court Justice C.C Nweze Passes Away at 64

Sad news has emerged today as Justice Chima Centus Nweze of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has been reported dead at the age of 64. The exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be confirmed, as the Supreme Court has not released an official statement at the time of this report.

Justice Nweze was known for his dissenting judgment in 2020, where he declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State. His decisions on cases were often influential and could have significant impacts.

In another notable case, Justice Nweze delivered a split judgment of three-against-two, which declared Ahmad Lawan as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District during the 25 February general election. These controversial judgments had drawn attention and sparked debates within the legal community and beyond.

A native of Obollo in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Justice Nweze was born on September 25, 1958. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014, during Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Justice Chima Centus Nweze's passing is a great loss to the Nigerian legal system and the nation as a whole. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
