In a bid to foster social policy change, service delivery, and economic growth in Enugu State, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have come together to voice their concerns and recommendations during a Citizens Engagement program held on Solid 100.9fm.

The engagement featured Hon Mark Onuoha, Lead Coordinator of Enugu Young Professionals Forum, and Dr. Daniel Ugwu, South Coordinator of Connected Development/Follow the Money. Together, they critically examined the implementation of the 2021/2022 Budget and discussed ways to address key challenges hindering the state's progress.
One of the major issues highlighted during the discussion was the allocation of the budget. The CSOs noted that any budget that prioritizes recurrent expenditure over capital expenditure is likely to fall short of achieving its goals. To achieve effective actualization of the budget, access to funding, insecurity, and inappropriate budget allocation must be addressed urgently.

In light of these challenges, the CSOs made several recommendations and called on the Enugu State Government to take specific actions to ensure social policy change, service delivery, and economic growth in the state.

1. Creating an Enabling Environment for Businesses and Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs):

To attract investors and foster economic growth, the CSOs urged the government to prioritize creating a safe space and an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. By providing necessary infrastructures, ensuring security, and streamlining bureaucratic processes, Enugu State can become an attractive destination for both local and foreign investments.

2. Harnessing Mineral Resources:

The CSOs emphasized the importance of tapping into the abundant mineral resources present in Enugu State. By developing sustainable mining practices and encouraging responsible investment in the sector, the state can generate significant revenue and create employment opportunities for its citizens.

3. Cutting Down on the Cost of Governance:

The high cost of governance has been a burden on the state's finances, leading to a reduced capacity to implement developmental projects effectively. The CSOs urged the government to prioritize cost-cutting measures, such as reviewing political appointees' salaries and benefits, optimizing administrative processes, and reducing wasteful spending.

Hon Mark Onuoha, Lead Coordinator of Enugu Young Professionals Forum, stressed the importance of these recommendations and their potential to drive positive change in the state. He stated, "Our ultimate goal is to see Enugu State thrive economically and socially. By adopting these recommendations, we can create a sustainable and prosperous future for all citizens."

The engagement on Solid 100.9fm allowed the CSOs to reach a broader audience and raise awareness about the urgent need for social policy change and improved service delivery in Enugu State. As the government takes note of these recommendations, the citizens are hopeful for a more prosperous and inclusive future.
