In a momentous occasion that celebrates her unwavering commitment to serving humanity, Dame Iyom Bianca O. Ojukwu (Ugo Eji Eje Mba) has been bestowed with the prestigious Meritorious Awards of Excellence by the Anambra Women General Assembly (AWGA). The honor was presented to Lady Bianca Ojukwu, former Nigerian Ambassador, Former Miss Nigeria, and esteemed wife of the late Governor of the Eastern Region, during a visit by AWGA to her residence in Enugu.
AWGA, a powerful sociocultural women's group comprising women of Anambra State origin and those married to Anambra men within Nigeria and the diaspora, was established with the aim of promoting women's inclusion in governance, advocating against the marginalization of non-indigenes in various Nigerian states, and raising awareness about the roles of women in society. The group actively contributes to socioeconomic development and undertakes social responsibilities encompassing environmental stewardship, ethical conduct, human rights advocacy, philanthropy, and economic empowerment.
During the visit, Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, the Global President of AWGA, highlighted the purpose of their visit, which was to forge closer ties with Lady Bianca Ojukwu, an Anambra woman, seeking her mentorship and drawing from her wealth of knowledge and experience garnered through her various services to the country. "We have appointed her as the Matron of our group and presented her with the Awards of Excellence in recognition of her numerous selfless services rendered to our communities, remarkable achievements, and significant contributions to improving the lives of women in Nigeria," she expressed.
In her address, Lady Patience Ikeobi, the Coordinator of AWGA, Enugu, expressed gratitude to Mrs. Ojukwu and emphasized the purpose of their visit. "On behalf of all women, we appeal to you to consistently advocate for inclusion of women in decision-making processes. As you operate in influential positions, we implore you to always consider the interests of all women. We are aware of the impact you have made and the work you continue to do. We are optimistic that our partnership will yield even greater results and benefit all women," Lady Ikeobi stated.
Lady Ngozi Edochie, the Assistant Coordinator of AWGA, Enugu Chapter, expressed her appreciation for Lady Bianca's warm reception. "As Anambra Women, whether by birth or marriage, we are impressed by your ongoing contributions to our society. We are delighted to be associated with you," Mrs. Edochie concluded.
In her vote of thanks, Lady Patricia Nweke, affectionately known as Mother General, highlighted AWGA's efforts in women's empowerment and humanitarian services. She cited a recent initiative where the group raised funds for financially disadvantaged women who could not afford necessary medical treatment. "In our recent intervention for a woman unable to access medical treatment due to financial constraints, we created awareness among the public and reached out to notable individuals who generously contributed to improving her deteriorating health condition. This visit brings us solace, knowing that our meeting with you is divinely ordained as a means to reach out to more lives," she expressed.
Expressing her gratitude, Lady Bianca Ojukwu commended the leadership of AWGA for setting a commendable example for women in society. She thanked them for their efforts in enlightening women and shed light on the challenges many women face. While acknowledging that some women may choose not to make the sacrifices that come with marriage, she emphasized that happiness cannot be found by having children with multiple partners. Additionally, she denounced the notion of women enduring domestic violence and abuse in the name of marriage. Lady Bianca Ojukwu pledged her commitment to serving as the Matron of AWGA, vowing to contribute her best to further their collective humanitarian efforts. She emphasized the importance of creating a good society that benefits all women.
Dame Iyom Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ugo Eji Eje Mba) currently holds the position of Permanent Representative at the United Nations World Tourism Organization, as of June 28, 2023. She also serves as the Secretary to the Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission in Anambra State, further solidifying her commitment to promoting harmony and fairness within society.
The AWGA's visit to Lady Bianca Ojukwu's residence was a significant occasion that recognized her outstanding commitment to selfless service and her invaluable contributions to the welfare of women in Nigeria.
