Breaking! Former APC Chairman Urges UNN to Admit Enugu’s Top JAMB Scorer, Offers Financial Support

Former Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye has promised financial assistance to 17-year-old Nwede Priscilla Chinecherem from Aninri Local government Area who broke a five-year JAMB record in the state.

A student of Queens Secondary School Enugu, Chinecherem scored 337 in the just concluded UTME conducted by JAMB in April ,2023.

Last year she was denied admission to study Nursing at the University of Nigeria Nsukka after scoring 265 in JAMB.

Chinecherem broke record set by Chidera obi who scored 329 to emerge best candidate five years ago.

After reading her story published by EverydayNews on May 4, 2023 Dr. Ben Nwoye declared interest in meeting the standout student.

During the meeting which took place in his resident at Independence Layout Enugu, Dr. Nwoye a lawyer and politician expressed worry that such a brain should be looking for admission.

He said; “It’s not about me today, it’s about her. And once more congratulations.

“She wants to go to University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and I have said; first, UNN should give her admission. And finance would not stop her from going to school. I will provide financial support.

“She wants to study Medicine and I am pleading with the management of UNN, that this girl is a special gift from Enugu State, a special child of Nigeria, she should be given the opportunity and finance will not be a reason for her not to go to school.

“Whatever it takes for her to go through the University and study her Medicine, financially, she will go through it and I will support her.

“Looking at her story, this is not her first JAMB, she took the first one scoring above 260. And they didn’t offer her admission. This also highlights the wrongs in our tertiary institutions.

I know those who scored less than 230 and they are studying Medicine. Someone scores over 260, you deny her admission. She is proving herself again scoring 337 being the best in the entire Enugu State and she is still waiting for admission.

Such a person should have scholarship. Big brains like this should be rewarded. That’s how you build a society. The society don’t run on the neck of average people.

The inventors of Microsoft are not average people; the Google guys are not average.

Those who are specially gifted should be singled out, recognized, praised for what they have done; but more than that, support them. Not just individual support like myself, we need institutional support. The school should sort after them.

You want to produce a first class, these are the people because they start early. She is a first class child and needs to run on that first class lane. Obviously at the end of the day the society will have a first class product.

I believe in rewarding hardwoAs a matter of general principle I believe in rewarding hardwork. She is among several people in the entire country and the state that participated in JAMB. She made herself exceptional. She pushed through becoming one of the best in Enugu. I believe in academic excellence. And this is happening in a period students are sorting; when people are going to special school. I wanted to see her to make sure she wrote it herself and also to use this as opportunity to tell others, you can do it.

She has not sorted, she has not gone to special center, she is a product of public school.

It also highlights that our public school system is not a failure. The teachers are doing well. And when we have such products coming out from public schools, no special aid other than her own hardwork.”

Dr. Ben Nwoye commended EverydayNews for highlighting her story, “because without that I wouldn’t have met her if not that you made your report and I read it.” Everydaynewsngr.
