Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have pledged massive turnout on March 18 to vote for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, saying they were impressed with his uncommon competence and outstanding leadership qualities.
The university students gave this assurance on Wednesday during a town hall meeting with the governorship hopeful at the Princess Alexanderia Auditorium where he espoused his vision for the state, especially students and the youth.
At the well-attended interactive session, the excited students could be heard shouting “Mr. Competence; Mr. Capacity; We trust you; Our tomorrow is here” even as the governorship hopeful outlined how he would create jobs for the youths, run a youth-inclusive government, and increase bursary fund for the various universities in the state.
In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, who was represented by the Dean Students Affairs, Prof. Edwin Omeje, expressed gratitude that the PDP gubernatorial flagbearer deemed it fit as the only candidate to hold a town hall meeting with the students.
He pledged to align himself with the candidate and his programmes, describing it as timely and fundamental.
On his part, Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam, who spoke on behalf of the academic community, commended Mbah for his vision for the state, urging him not to be distracted when he assumes office as governor.
He called on Mbah to extend a hand of fellowship to the university community through partnership that would lead to improvement in the academic system.
While corroborating the above, the students union president, Comrade Abuchi Michael, said they were thrilled by the lofty programmes, track records, and capacity of the foremost governorship flagbearer.
He promised that they would come out en masse and queue behind him on the day of the election.
On his part, Mbah said the tagline of his “Tomorrow Is Here” was being driven by his desire to create a better future for the youths where they could discover their talents, explore their potentials and create wealth from them.
He maintained that his plan was to transform the status of the state from public sector economy to a private sector driven economy where technology innovation and industrialisation would be the key factors that would define the development pace of the state.
He promised to build schools of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence with high speed internet, workstations, through his incubation-innovation policy which would enable youths to operate at the digital space to make their earnings.
“We want to create opportunities for our young ones to flourish in whatever profession you have chosen. Our administration will also set aside 100 billion naira revolving fund for you to start your businesses,” he said.
Mbah, who spoke on exploring the energy and mineral resources sector as source of creative alternative financing model, added that agriculture would migrate to mechanized and agro-allied processing industry for large production and export.
Promising to partner with the different universities and other institutions in the state for the training of students, the business magnate said students would be given bursary to enable them complete their studies.
He further assured that insecurity in the state would be tackled through the eradication of poverty and unemployment.
The governorship flagbearer called on the students to interrogate the background of all the candidates seeking their votes, ask them what they had achieved outside politics, and query their programmes for the state, adding that competence, capacity, character, track records should be the standard rather than sentiment and political parties.
