Knowing agriculture's contributions to economic development of developing countries, Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah through his statement of purpose (Manifesto) has clearly stated strategic programmes to implement in the agricultural sector for industrial development and capital accumulation for Enugu state.
According to Mbah, his administration will feed Enugu State and turn Enugu State into a food-basket for Nigerian and a hub for export of cash crops, make agriculture a profitable business that will create jobs for youths and completely eliminate food insecurity in the state by 2031 through massive investments in technologies for agricultural productivity.
As the engine of economic growth in the first Republic in Nigeria, agriculture will play a very important role in in the state because a sustainable agricultural sector literally translates to a sustainable economy. It's also clear that survival will be impossible without agriculture because agriculture does not only feed the mouth, it is also a source of income for both individuals and the government, and it has also played a vital role in the economic development of Nigeria and other third world countries. Since Barr. Peter Mbah is intentional about the agricultural sector of the state, it is to say that he is giving the state another opportunity to be rich again.
For food security, if Mbah’s administration develops the state’s agricultural sector, there would be food security in the state. This is because if the sector is developed, there would be sufficiency of farm product, the farm produce will be of good quality, it will be safe and even cheaper and the below-average income earners would be able to afford the three square meals in a day and by this, it will eradicate poverty in the state.
The agricultural sector will not only go a long way in eradicating poverty as well as improving the lives of the rural people in the country, research has shown that most of the rural people in Nigeria are farmers, if the government pay attention to these people, and also assist in improving the quality of their lives in addition to practicing sustainable agriculture, there would be a great reduction in the level of poverty, this is what Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah intend to achieve.
Agriculture is a good method of industrialization in every country of the world, the proper harnessing of agricultural products and by-products will lead to rapid industrialization. Most industries in developing countries depend directly or indirectly on farm produce.
Through the creation of employment in the rural areas it discourages rural to urban migration and this helps in the better distribution of incomes and balanced use of social amenities. Through all this multiplier effects agriculture is perceived to be an engine of economic growth and development.
