Even though 2023 is still about four months ahead, politicians have started politicking. In Enugu state, for instance, the political science is already jampacked. In the last three months, many political parties in the state have featured known and unknown players that are likely to contest the 2023 governorship elections in the state.
Whether we accept it or not, it is understandable that those with the ambition to occupy any political position will engage in quiet networking amongst friends and consultation with party members. This is the situation that we have found ourselves in at the moment. It is to be expected, therefore, that the political fireworks from those interested in the 2023 Enugu state gubernatorial election will continue in high propensity on radio, television, newspapers and other social media platforms.
It is on this premise that I chose to break my studied silence and write about Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a highly respected political leader and outstanding lawyer in Enugu state and beyond. No doubt, Dr. Mbah is a detribalized man who plays politics without bitterness. This much has been established beyond doubt in many narratives about the man Peter Mbah. Besides, Dr. Mbah who has expressed interest in running for the office of Governor under the umbrella of PDP come 2023, plays non-tribal or religious politics. Beyond that, he is one politician who is very much in touch with both the grassroots people and the mighty men in society.
Aside from his political strength, his hands of fellowship and generosity know no bounds as he is always ready to extend the same to every Nigerian citizen not minding where such a person comes from. In fact, so many people especially writers and journalists have written on the pages of newspapers, countless articles about the philosophic works of the Owo born political icon. I have equally met some of the people he empowered educationally and economically in Enugu communities. His types are not easy to come by especially in present-day Nigeria.
For sure, an Igbo maxim says, "the story of a good man is not hard to tell at every point in time." The implication is that a good fish sells itself. This is the true picture of Dr. Peter Mbah as a typical grassroot politician and humanitarian. Needless to delve into his biography which many writers before now, have also written on, but I must emphasize that Dr. Mbah who is from Owo community in Nkanu East local government area of Enugu state is one man who is a rare breed. To say that Owo has greatly blessed to have this reputable lawyer, astute politician, humanitarian and businessman, who has an uncommon reputation for humanitarian works, kindness and success in whatever he sets out to achieve, is an understatement.
As a politician, the records are there for anyone to judge. As a commissioner for finance and economic development, he did extremely well. As a Chief of Staff to Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, he toured the entire Enugu state, ensuring that peace and progress never eluded the state. As a humanitarian/philanthropist of note, Dr. Peter Mbah remains a beacon of hope for so many less privileged people of our generation.
There are reports that he derives happiness from helping the poor and the needy. Considering how governance has been used to the disadvantage of the needy, no one needs a Prophet to tell Ndi-Enugu that as the 2023 Enugu gubernatorial bell rings very loudly, there is one man who cherished them and would serve them selflessly if given the ticket to lion building through an election process to be elected Governor. For me, the man that fits the expectations of the masses like Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state in 2015 with respect to Enugu state masses is Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
For now, I want to strongly believe that the rotational formula implemented by the PDP since the time of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani to date, that has created equity, fairness and justice within the three senatorial districts in Enugu state, is still very much in force and will be respected. Indeed, we commend Governor Chimaroke Nnamani and other founding members of PDP as well as other political leaders for that singular political initiative. In fact, it has created a kind of political harmony and peace across the state. Curiously, the APC, and other political parties in opposition in the state at the moment, has come to accept this political formula as a well-planned initiative to foster peace and progress in Enugu state.
Based on the rotational arrangement in Enugu state, the 2023 governorship position in the state is coming to Enugu east senatorial district (Nkanu) without dispute. But be that as it may, at the end of the election next year, Peter Mbah must have emerged as governor of Enugu state. Thus, for the next democratically elected governor of Enugu state, well-meaning Ndi-Enugu should rally around the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Mbah come 2023 so that the masses can, with rejoicing, say that a man of the people has indeed come to lion building.
