Reacting to the viral video of an inhumane treatment meted out on a woman who allegedly committed a sacrilege for picking up a sacred snail from a community shrine in his council area, Hon. Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo, came out to publicly express his displeasure on the act, citing that it's against the woman's Rights To Dignity Of Human Persons and Rights To Personal Liberty as enshrined in the Chapter 4. Section 34 and 35 of 1999 constitution as amended.
For Hon. Nwankwo, "every Nigerian has the rights to be valued and respected for their own sake and be treated with morality and ethics, not to be subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment".
FountainCare Reporters gathered that the video evidence of a woman publicly humiliated and stripped naked by some villagers in Affam Mmaku after she was being accused of picking Sacred Snails from the community shrine has trended for some days and the Chairman of Awgu LGA has queried the people of the area and reassured the FountainCare Reporters Correspondents and the general public that the council is on top of the matter.
He went futher to stress that his office had on hearing the news conducted personal investigations while cooperating with the Security Agencies in Awgu LG and other Corporate Organisations in ensuring that right measures and approaches were taken in addressing the barbaric occurrence and forestalling such further inhuman treatment. As at the time of publishing this information, some number of arrests have been made while he is believing that further arrests will still take place.
He acknowledged the concerns of the Commissioner for Gender Affairs Enugu State, Princess Peace Nnaji, the Global Society for Anti-Corruption (GSAC) Enugu State led by Mrs Amaka Nweke, The Heroine Women Foundation/Women Support Women led by Amb. Mrs Onyinye Mamah for coming out to condem it while appreciating the efforts of the Security Agencies in Awgu LG in ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators were brought to book.
He affirmed that any injudicious act, molestation, assault, stripping a woman naked in public for whatever influence, motivation and reaction are criminal regardless of whomever committed it, wherever and whenever.
Hon. Nwankwo deeply feels for the victim, the family and her children for the public ridicule and the traumatic experience their mother/wife/aunt/sister is passing through and promised that she will be given fair treatment.
